8 Tips to Manage Your Mental Health Over The Holiday Season

The holiday season can be one of the most stressful times of the year for many, especially within the last few years of COVID not making that time of the year any easier. Here are a few tips to help you stay sane, find some balance, and care for your mental well-being.

  1. Exercise: Physical health and fitness have always been a significant impact on mental health, and that is why so many people add that to their list of New Year’s Resolutions so why not start now? From at-home workouts with no equipment needed to workout videos with equipment or even classes at gyms, there are so many options no matter what your goals.
  2. Getting Outside into Fresh Air: To avoid feeling cooped up inside, experts recommend trying to get outside for some fresh air at least once a day. This may be hard depending on the weather, but it is so important for clearing your head and creating some mental balance. If you find it hard to do, try heading out first thing in the morning to get your day started on the right foot.
  3. Connecting with Others: At the start of the pandemic we did our best to distance ourselves from others, but it is important to make sure you maintain social connections with friends and family who are outside your household. Maintaining relationships and connections can help boost serotonin in yourself.
  4. Set Healthy Boundaries: When it comes to the holidays, it can sometimes bring unwanted obligations to spend time with those who you’d rather avoid into your life. So, it is important to set clear boundaries and communicate with others what is necessary for your physical and mental stability. Be polite – but also be kind to your own mental health.
  5. Maintain a Deliberate Self-Care Routine: Rather than occasionally taking a break to relax or take care of yourself, make self-care a consistent part of your daily routine. From yoga or medication, to exercise, to cooking a healthy meal, or doing a dobby you love – it is important to keep it a part of your daily routine for your own mental health.
  6. Sleep: We have always been told the importance of sleep but as life gets more stressful, especially around the holidays, sleep continues to remain important for your mental and physical health. It gives you time to recharge and rest your mind and body.
  7. Acknowledge That Times Are Different: The last few years have taken a toll on everyone and the world, it is important to know that things will get better. Holidays may not seem like they used to 5, 10, or 20 years ago, but it is always important to recognize that things are different and this will pass. If you are feeling stressed during the holidays, recognizing times are different will help.
  8. Seek Help If You Need: If you find yourself struggling or in need of help, be sure to talk to a family member, trusted friend, or mental health professional to get the help you need.
